The purpose of the Athlete Travel Assistance Program is to support senior athletes in national level competition. Their work ethic, commitment, mental toughness, and dedication to the athletic training process over a period of many years provide role models for our younger team members.
-
Athletes competing in the National Championships and/or Junior Nationals (August meets) will have their hotel and airline ticket paid by the team.
-
Athletes competing in a preparatory senior travel meet (to be selected by the Head Coach) will have their hotel paid by the team.
-
Illinois Swimming club assistance monies go to the club, not to the family.
-
Travel assistance meets and participating athletes are selected by the Head Coach.
Athlete Responsibilites - Travel Assistance Program
-
The athlete’s family team fee payments must be current, including meet entry fees and incidentals.
-
Athletes age 18-under or post-grad must be eligible to score Club Excellence points for the WAVES team in the meet for which he/she is receiving travel assistance. Unattached swimmers are not eligible for travel assistance.
-
College athletes must be eligible to represent the WAVES in competition.
-
College and post-grad athletes must make a significant contribution to the team in role modeling, mentoring, and positive leadership in and out of the pool. Interested athletes will apply to the Head Coach for application and interview.
-
All eligible athletes will be selected for travel assistance by the Head Coach if well prepared and if meet fits within the long term training and competition plan for athlete as determined by Head Coach. It is very important that every athlete we take to a major meet is properly prepared to race well and represent the WAVES at a high level of personal performance. We do not attend big meets "for the experience," but to swim fast.
-
Athletes attending high level team travel meets must also have shown by their behavior that they are supportive members of the WAVES swim team. In addition to the above requirements, they will:
-
Attend meets as determined by WAVES Head Coach.
-
Help with fundraising efforts.
-
Help at clinics and camps conducted by the team.
-
Act as positive and excellence-valuing role models for our younger swimmers.
