Good job WAVES!

Hey WAVES! Monica blogs on the ready room with Katie Hoff, ice cream, and fireworks!

Today was a pretty exciting day for me. I got up, ready to race my 800 free in prelims! I was excited that it wasn't the last event like usual, so everybody can leave! Instead, there was a pretty good crowd for an 800, people waiting around to watch a men's 100 fly and a women's 200 back.

Last night they were supposed to put the heat sheets online an hour after finals finished. So when we got back to the hotel, I got on the computer and got very excited when I looked at my heat. I was in lane 8, but in lane 4 was Katie Hoff, who I'd never raced in the same heat with. When I saw that, I thought, oh great, recalling the past 5 days at the meet when it seemed every other sentence that came out of the announcer's mouth included some combination of "Katie Hoff, under, world record pace, again." I thought about all my friends and family who were there to watch me would find themselves shifting their eyes to lane 4 and before they realized it, the race would be over, and they'd forget I was in the pool!

But, it was a lot of fun to be racing such an incredible swimmer. In the ready room, I found myself talking casually among her and a couple of other great swimmers. By the time they called my name, I was ready to lead my heat out to the pool, since I was in lane 8 as I mentioned earlier. During my race, I could only see the girl next to me in lane 7, so I just tried to stay with her and eventually get ahead of her, which I managed to do. When the race was over, I looked up, was a second off my best time. I was in the second-to-last heat, so I watched the last heat, and waited for the final results to show up on the scoreboard. I ended up 17th.

After the race, I went out to eat with the Bernardi family, who were here to support me, and their friends they were staying with. Then I got ice cream : ) and headed back to watch finals. It was a special night at finals because every section had t-shirts, alternating red, white, and blue throughout the stadium. The swimmers got the crowd pretty riled up and got the entire crowd yelling and doing the wave for a solid 5 minutes. I think most of the swimmers were in a great mood because I would guess about 80% them were done racing by this point, which I a great relief, I can attest to. I could really sense everyone else was feeling that relief too.

My family and Caitlin watched some random fireworks and played cards to enjoy the 4th of July. Then we went out for a late night snack of pizza.

Now we have one last day to enjoy the beautiful city of Omaha :) before Caitlin and I leave Sunday morning. Charlie is not leaving until Monday morning. See you all when we get home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much for your support!!!

800 Results...17th and virtual 24th Friday, meet day 6
Monica swims 8:44.06, just 10ths away from a best time and her best 800 in 2 1/2 years, to place 17th. Caitlin's time trial 8:48.61 from Thursday would have placed her 24th.

3rd race, 3rd best time! Caitlin tells it like it is, regarding Thursday, meet day 5

Hello again everyone who has been reading Mo and my blogs over this past week. Thursday was yet another eventfull day for both of us with Monica time trialing the 200IM and I the 800FR!!!!

Due to not wanting to sit around the pool for hours, we asked Charlie to leave at 11 instead of the typical 10:30...and oh was it great! We got to the pool with plenty of time to relax, watch racing, sign up for our swims, and shop a bit (sssshhh don't tell Charlie ). Monica and I found new meet shirts that we just "had to have", plus the people at the Speedo store probably love Monica and her credit card by now. We also met some cool swimmers from Virginia while watching the prelims session, its surprising to see how many people actually know who the WAVES are. But the time to switch to our preformer selves came quickly upon us, so both Mon and I went back to the streching area to prepare for more fast swimming!

I jumped into the warm up pool thinking I would be one of the first heats to swim in the session, but after searching for Charlie (who oddly just left the pool during my warm up) I learned that the 800 had been moved to last in the session. I had already done the majority of my warming up, so I had to get out, dry off, and wait until it came closer to my race to get back in. I loosened up for my pace work and prepared for another great swim. Mo's 200IM was right before me and she went an impressive 2:21 (a second over a TRIALS cut), and as I got behind the blocks, I knew I was also in for a great swim. I held the exact same pace I did in warm up for the race and got so excited during my last 50m... that I just gave it everything my mind and body had left. I touched...looked up...and saw a 8:48!!!! Which is under the TRIALS cut, and considering this season I had yet to break 9:00...I was beyond excited. I heard Charlie cheer, but was looking for my mom and brother at the opposite side. All my years of hard work, up and downs, trials and success...made that moment possible.

The rest of the day was a relief. Im done!! Now Im concentrating on talking with colleges and enjoying the last few days of the meet.

It's almost over everyone! Keep the excitment alive though!!

Awesome time trial performances! Thursday, meet day 5

800 FS, 8:48.61, Caitlin's best time, achieves Olympic Trials time standard
200 IM, 2:21.36, Monica's best time, achieves Club Excellence swim and Junior Nationals cut

One of the athlete rest areas, looking down from the deck of the warm-up pool.

Hey everybody! Monica blogs on Wednesday, meet day 4

Today Caitlin and I woke up as usual, had breakfast, and headed over to the pool. We watched prelims, and after that I did a time trial of the 200 free. I went a best time by a little over a second, 2:02.72. I was pretty excited, since that is a trials cut. If I would have swam it in the meet, I would've gotten 59th out of 103 swimmers.

After that, Caitlin and I had lunch with my dad at Spaghetti Works. That was really good. After lunch, we had a couple hours to relax at the hotel before finals. We had good seats at finals, and enjoyed finals as usual.

After finals, we went out to eat with my dad and headed to bed. Tomorrow Caitlin will finish up racing with a time trial of the 800 free and I will time trial the 200 IM.

Here's the 25m section of the L-shaped warmup pool. This is an above ground

are lots of soft wrestling mats for swimmers to stretch and relax. That's not all...

Bluefish coach Chuck Batchelor (Elizabeth Beisel's coach) reviews race video with
Russell Mark of USA Swimming's coach technical services.

Saint Petersburg Aquatics coach Fred Lewis online in coaches lounge. The TV has live feed of

Ice and ultrasound therapy also available.

Hey All! Caitlin with the scoop on Tuesday, meet day 3

As any other day that we've been here in Omaha, we stuck to our typical routine of getting up at 8:45 for breakfast at 9, and the proceeding to the pool by 10:30. As mentioned by Monica earlier I was to time trial the 200m free today in the session following prelims. So Charlie and us girls headed over to the pool to get me signed up and ready to go!

Mo and I watched all the heats of the 200 in prelims before heading back to the "backstage" area to settle in. We spent some time in the Toyota lounge again before Monica headed to the warm up pool for a workout and me to warm up. After what I would deem a pretty good warm up, I went to get another form of exercise (putting on my blueseventy) before the time trial. Just like in prelims before our race all the atheletes were held in the "race ready" area before our heats. I was in the first heat lane 8 for my race, with the split I had posted in my 400 as my entry time. This race felt so much harder than my 400, but for me the 200 always comes as a different type of challenge than the longer events. Don't worry everyone I swam well enough to have both Charlie and Monica on speaking terms with me, going a best time of 2:06.72 to earn more club points for the team.

After the race we headed back to the hotel. When and where Monica and I couldn't agree on a lunch choice. So I (being in somewhat of an independent mood anyways) went off to have lunch loaner style at this local Mongolian place. The shrimp lo-mein made the trip worth it! After lunch I headed back to the room to catch up on my sleep hours (nothing goes as planned at meets you know) before finals. Right on schedule we all headed back to the Qwest for finals at 5:30.

Once there, all the seats for swimmers and coaches were full, so Mon and I headed up to the nosebleeds to watch finals. Tonight two WR's were set in both the mens and womens 100 backs. Natalie Coughlin and Aaron Peirsol both had amazing swims, along with the rest of the swimmers in their heats. We also saw other USA favorites make the team in the womens 100 breast, and mens 200 free. After finals Mo and I hurried to meet Charlie back at the car (partially to beat the crowd and partially because it was going to be a long hike), and returned back to the hotel.

I've ended my evening watching a few episodes of The Office and Friends, and typing my lengthy blog to all of you! I hope you all are enjoying watching finals on TV, because we've enjoyed watching them here.

Caitlin time trials best time in 200 FS Tuesday, meet day 3
2:06.72 is 4th new Club Excellence swim in past 5 days

Caitlin relaxes backstage before her 200. The 50m warmup pool is in background.

Today Caitlin and I woke up ready to race! Monday, meet day 2, Monica

We went downstairs for breakfast, came back up, got our bags together, and went out the door to the pool. We got there at about 10:45 and were not racing until about 1:15. We had a lot of extra time. I especially enjoyed distracting myself from thinking about my race by playing RockBand in the athlete hospitality area. Nothing like getting your mind off of things by playing RockBand with random swimmers at the meet!

When it was time for me to get in to warm-up, Caitlin was just finishing up her warm-up. I was able to watch her race from a TV “backstage” in the warm-up room. I was so excited for her when I saw her go a best time in the 100, then 200! I was really happy for her! Once she finished, I spent 15 minutes putting on my racing suit, and headed over to the ready room. I was in there for about 5 minutes. Then, they called our heat, and we walked out. Behind the block, I was so ready to race, in between two girls I have competed against many times, one from Lakeside, Kentucky, and one from Emily Hanson’s team in Michigan.

The race was a lot of fun! It’s always a great feeling when you know you have tried the very best you could and see the result. I got second in my heat, and beat my best time from 2 and a half years ago by .16 seconds. I felt a lot of pressure to get a best time after so much time had passed, but it felt good to be accomplished.

Both my family and Caitlin’s family were able to come see the race today. So after lunch we went our separate ways to spend time with our families.

At 5:30, we headed back to the pool to watch finals. The best race of the night had to be the women’s 400 free. I think it’s always fun to watch your own race. But it was an awesome race between Katie Hoff, Kate Ziegler, Allison Schmitt, and Caroline Burkle! Katie Hoff ended up first and Kate Ziegler got second.

After finals, we came back to the room and relaxed. Caitlin is racing a time trial of the 200 free tomorrow in between prelims and finals. Charlie and I are so excited to see Caitlin race the 200 after her best time today!

WOW!!!! Sunday, meet day 1 from Caitlin

Sorry everyone for skipping a day, but quoting Monica "nothing happened" on Saturday. Today however was event filled with the meet officially starting!

This morning we followed our typical routine, of eating breakfast at the hotel and leaving for the pool around 10:30. Charlie and us girls went to the Qwest to get a good seat for prelims. The meet started at 11 with the men's 400 IM, and followed with women's 100 fly, men's 400 free, women's 400 IM, and men's 100 breast. The swims in this session set up finals for amazing races! It seemed in every event there were two swimmers going head to head fighting for the top spot for finals. In the midst of the fast swimming both Mo and I went to warm up pool to get in a good loosen swim. I was done with mine by the time Monica even got in. So I took the chance to check out what was offered for the athletes. I chilled in the hot tubs, went on the computers in the Toyota lounge, and downed a lot of blue Gatorade!

After prelims, Monica and I went back to the hotel for lunch with her dad. By this point both of us were ready for a nap. Once we were back in the room I set my phone alarm for 4:30 due to having to meet Charlie at 5:30. In a sleepy fog, I heard Monica get out of the shower and rolled over to look at my phone... it was 5:15!!! I jumped out of bed, freaking out because I still needed to shower before finals! Thankfully I was speedy enough to meet Charlie on time to head back to the pool for the finals.

Well the first day of finals did not disappoint anyone in the crowd. The lights dimmed for the playing of the National Anthem there was a light show and water fall flowing with images of USA Swimming and Trials images. Michael Phelps set a World Record in the 400 IM to start the meet (so did the second place swimmer, Ryan Lochte), Larsen Jensen set an American Record in the 400 free, and Kate Hoff also set a World Record in the 400 IM. There was a fireworks show as the records were broken, and all 12,000 people got on their feet and cheered.

I hope all of you got the chance to watch these swims on NBC! Being here is truly an experience that is unforgettable, and I'm sure Mo agrees.

Today was our first day waking up in Omaha Day 2 post from Monica

We got to sleep in a little bit, ate an awesome breakfast in the hotel, and headed over to the pool for a great workout at about 11. When we got back to the hotel, Caitlin and I had lunch with my dad at a place called “The Twisted Fork.” After lunch, while Caitlin was reading and napping in the hotel, my dad and I went to catch a few rays and read. As Charlie was on his way home from his run, he spotted me in the sun and limited me to 30 minutes for the next few days before our race. I sadly agreed.

At about 5, we headed back to the Qwest Center for more swimming!!! On our way there, the tornado sirens were going off. However, the weather looked perfectly fine, so we were rather annoyed because they were going on for so long. Once we arrived to the pool, a couple of swimmers from Northwestern mentioned to us that they had heard that the pools were being evacuated. Sure enough, when we entered the building, the hallways were crowded with dry swimmers who hadn’t yet gotten a workout in, and swimmers who looked like they had been interrupted in the middle of a set due to a serious tornado warning. I thought everyone at the Qwest Center might have been overreacting because there were a lot of people there and it is an important building, but I called my dad back at the hotel and said that someone came over the loudspeaker on the hotel ordering to either go to the second floor or sit in the bathrooms. At this point I was still laughing. It was funny to see people from other parts of the country who are not used to tornadoes and prefer earthquakes to be quite alarmed. Caitlin and I played cards for about a half hour while Charlie socialized but then we were told to move to a different part of the building because apparently they thought we weren’t safe. When we moved, we were by a few TVs with the The Weather Channel and the News on and sure enough, we saw our very own Quest Center as the main story, with part of the roof damaged. Then we finally decided to leave, without getting to swim, but that was a little bit of a hassle. When we finally got outside, we were shocked to see all the damage and debris around the building! We didn’t feel a thing!

We safely returned to our hotel, got my dad, and went out to dinner. There were many power outages and our first choice of a restaurant was closed for that reason. After we dropped Charlie off at the hotel, we went to find a Blockbuster. We found one, whose power was out, but the sun was still up so we could still get movies. They had to do everything by hand. Then we came back to relax. What an eventful day!!

Hey Waves Swimmers and Fans!! Day 1 report from Caitlin

Today was the beginning of Monica and I’s adventure of the Trials. We arrived in Omaha around four this afternoon, checked into our hotel, and went over to the Qwest Center. If any of you have seen pictures of the Center, trust me… they don’t do it justice. The competition pool is beautiful, and is perfect for hosting the fastest meet ever! Behind the arena is the warm up/down pool, along with a lounge for athletes (which is complete with tv’s that will be showing live feed of the meet and plenty of computers), massage and PT services, and couple of hot tubs! I’ve been describing the Center to people back home as a swimmer’s dream. Mo and I are settling in nicely here in Omaha, and are looking forward to the coming days of fast swimming!

Get excited everyone, only a few days before things get under way here!

WAVES in 99th Percentile...Top 20 Clubs in USA June 18

We have 3 swimmers, age 17 or younger, entered in the Olympic Trials. How rare an achievement is that? Who are the best USA Swimming clubs in the nation at developing young swimmers to elite levels of the sport? Does our team rank among the best clubs in the country? Just how good are we?

To answer these questions, I ran the numbers on the 2008 Olympic Trials entry data. I thought I’d share these numbers with you, so you can have a better idea of how our WAVES team is doing compared to all the other swim clubs in the country.

What I found out is…we’re one of the top 20 clubs in the country developing 17-unders up to Olympic Trials level. With approximately 2,800 total member clubs, this puts our little team in the 99th percentile of all USA Swimming teams, better than 99.29%. Pretty good, being better than 2,780 of 2,800, especially considering the small size of our community and our limited facilities.

Scroll down to view a list of the Top 20 developmental teams. Interesting to see who else is getting the job done. And..we are the only Central Zone team in the Top 20.
